First Dutch spark spread traded

16 Jan 08

The first OTC Dutch spark spread was traded today – and was brokered by Spectron, the leading energy broker.

The deal was a Q4 ‘08 spark spread, for 30 MW of TTF gas vs 15 MW of Dutch electricity, the price for the gas being EUR 27.20/MWh and the price of the power being EUR 70.95/MWh. The trade was concluded between a London-based financial institution and a Dutch utility.

Spark spreads represent the generating margin of gas-fired power stations. Standard spark spreads are calculated from the difference between power prices and gas prices (adjusted for fuel efficiency).

Spectron has long been the leading broker of spark spreads in the UK, and has been instrumental in the development of the market for spark and dark (coal vs power) spreads in Europe.
